The Origins In Mahabharat

According to legend, Chhath Puja was first performed by Karna, the Sun’s devoted son, during the Mahabharat era. Karna would stand in water for long hours, offering Arghya to Surya Dev, earning blessings that elevated him to a legendary warrior. The practice of standing in water while praying for divine blessings is believed to have started from this period.

Pandavas And Chhath Puja

Another tale from Mahabharat narrates that the Pandavas, along with Draupadi, performed Chhath Puja to regain lost honour, wealth, and their kingdom. Through these rituals, they restored their glory and prosperity in Hastinapur, reinforcing the festival’s association with devotion and divine intervention.

Ramayan Era Rituals

After returning from a 14-year exile, Lord Ram performed Rajsuya Yagna on the advice of sages to absolve sins, including the consequences of Ravana’s defeat. Mother Sita was instructed to perform six-day Surya Dev puja, establishing Chhath Puja as a symbol of purity, devotion, and gratitude to the Sun God.

Vision Of Chhathi Maiya In Dreams

Puranic stories tell of King Priyavrat, who had no children. Feeling hopeless, he was guided in a dream by Chhathi Maiya to worship Surya Dev. Following her instructions brought him blessings and offspring, making the practice of offering prayers to Surya Dev a hallmark of faith and hope.

Chhath In Kalyug – Bihar Tradition

In Kalyug, the festival is believed to have been first observed in ancient Dev (now Aurangabad, Bihar). A leprosy-affected devotee prayed to Surya Dev on the Shukla Shashthi of Kartik month and was miraculously cured. This event popularised the festival as a powerful act of devotion, continuing the tradition through generations.
