Jayawardena returns to cricket as captain

Jayawardene, who appears twice on the Honours Board in the visitors' dressing room at Lord's for his centuries against England in 2002 and 2006, became an Honorary Life Member of the MCC in 2015.

The triangular T20 tournament will mark Netherlands' second visit to the venue in six years; the side last played there in the ECB's 40-over competition, in 2012.

For Nepal, this will be a much-awaited return to Lord's after their debut at the ground, in 2016, when they got the better of MCC by 4 wickets.

Apart from Jayawardena, the MCC squad has three Scotland players – Alasdair Evans, Mark Watt and Dylan Budge. The rest of the squad will be announced shortly.

Now Jayawardena has been named the captain of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for the triangular T20 triple-header at Lord's involving Nepal and Netherlands starting from July 29.

At a time when the Sri Lankan team is dealing with an unpleasant situation of ball-tampering, which led to the suspension of their Test captain Dinesh Chandimal, there is a breath of fresh air coming in for the islanders from England.

In 2017, Jayawardena was signed by Lancashire as a non-overseas recruit for the T20 Blast, where he previously played for Sussex and Somerset.

Former Sri Lankan captain and one of their greatest batsmen across formats, Mahela Jayawardena is set to return to the cricket field and that too as the captain.

Jayawardena had announced his Test retirement in 2014 and played his last ODI in the 2015 World Cup.

After that he had taken up the head coach’s responsibility of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.
