PM Modi Vows 'Justice' After 'Heinous' Pahalgam Terror Attack; Shah Promises 'Harshest Consequences'

Union Home Minister Amit Shah breifed PM Narendra Modi about the Pahalgam terror attack. Shah convened a meeting, spoke with Jammu and Kashmir officials, and will visit Pahalgam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. According to sources, the Prime Minister, currently on a state visit to Saudi Arabia, directed the Home Minister to take all suitable measures and asked him to visit the attack site. At least 26 people have died in the terror attack where terrorists fired 50 rounds on tourists, sources said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the case.

Modi condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act”. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected.”

Sending a stern warning to those behind the violence, PM Modi asserted, “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will only grow stronger.”

Following the attack, Home Minister Amit Shah convened an urgent high-level meeting at his residence in Delhi. Top officials including the Director of the Intelligence Bureau and the Union Home Secretary were present at the meeting. Shah also spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Senior officials such as the CRPF Director General, the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, and army officers joined the meeting via video conferencing.

Shah expressed anguish over the incident and stated that he would visit the attack site in Pahalgam: "Anguished by the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. My thoughts are with the family members of the deceased. Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared, and we will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences. Briefed PM Shri @narendramodi Ji about the incident and held a meeting with the concerned officials via video conferencing. Will shortly leave for Srinagar to hold an urgent security review meeting with all the agencies."

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also spoke with the Army Chief regarding the attack and is monitoring the army’s operations in the region.

Rajnath Singh slammed the attack, stating, "Deeply anguished by the news of terrorist attack in Pahalgam (Jammu & Kashmir). This dastardly attack on innocent civilians is an act of cowardice and highly reprehensible. My thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families."

Pahalgam Attack 'Much Larger Than Anything We’ve Seen Directed At Civilians': CM Omar Abdullah

Remarking on the attack, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on social media, “The death toll is still being ascertained so I don’t want to get into those details. They will be officially conveyed as the situation becomes clearer. Needless to say, this attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”

I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased. I’ve spoken to my colleague @sakinaitoo & she has moved to the hospital to oversee arrangements for the injured. I’ll be flying back to Srinagar immediately," he wrote, condemning the asault.

At Least 12 Tourists Injured In Pahalgam Terror Attack

According to news agency PTI, at least 12 tourists were injured in the terrorist attack, which took place at Baisaran, a meadow in Anantnag district accessible only on foot or by pony. Officials said a group of tourists had gone to the meadow on Tuesday morning when unidentified gunmen opened fire at close range.

A woman survivor, speaking to PTI over the phone, said, “My husband was shot in the head while seven others were also injured in the attack.” She did not identify herself but pleaded for help in evacuating the injured.

Authorities deployed a helicopter to assist in the evacuation, while locals used ponies to bring some of the wounded down from the meadows. A doctor at the Pahalgam hospital confirmed that 12 injured tourists were admitted, and all of them are in stable condition.

A senior police official said security forces rushed to Baisaran after gunfire was heard. The attack comes at a time when Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourist arrivals and days before the start of the 38-day Amarnath Yatra on 3 July. The pilgrimage attracts lakhs of devotees annually via the 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the shorter 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal.
