Heavy Rains Cause Flooding In Many Areas Of Gujarat, Kill 11 As Rescue Operation Is Underway

Heavy rains caused flood-like situations in several parts of Gujarat and left many villages cut off after roads were flooded or had been washed away.

Heavy rains caused flood-like situations in several parts of Gujarat and led to many villages getting cut off, said officials on Sunday. They further said multiple villages were cut off after roads were flooded or had been washed away. Currently, the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF) are engaged in operations to rescue stranded people in all these areas. Meanwhile, data from the State Emergency Operation Centre revealed many parts of the Valsad and Navsari districts received extremely heavy rainfall in a 24-hour period till Sunday morning, news agency PTI reported.

Police said 11 people have been killed so far in rain-related incidents and Jamnagar is one of the worst-affected districts. State government officials said villages in Limbdi taluka of Surendranagar district were cut off due to the flooding of approach roads. They also said around seven people were rescued by residents from one of the villages.

In the last 24 hours, the state has received 32 millimetres of average rainfall, with Dharampur taluka in Valsad district leading with 234 mm, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.

It said 205 talukas of the state received a significant amount of rainfall, with parts of Valsad, Navsari, Junagadh, Amreli, Chhota Udepur, Ahmedabad and Surendranagar districts receiving between 100-234 mm of rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that several parts of Gujarat are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall during the next five days.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Gujarat government was taking all efforts to provide relief to people amid heavy rains.

In a Tweet, he said, “Due to the heavy rains in Gujarat, the government is fully engaged in providing all possible help to the people affected by the flood-like situation in many places.”

After speaking to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Shah also said NDRF and SDRF teams and local administration are engaged in helping people in these areas.
