Jharkhand Student Protest: Talks Fail as Rival Groups Emerge, Assembly March Set for August 10

The student agitation over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand’s government recruitment examinations intensified in Ranchi after nearly five hours of talks between protesters and the Hemant Soren government failed to produce a final agreement. The meetings were held with different student groups as the administration sought to address the demands raised during the 16-day protest. According to representatives, the government agreed to several demands, including cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination and backlog examinations from 2023 and 2025, along with proposed reforms in the JPSC system. However, disagreement continued over the cancellation of the JSSC CGL examination and examinations conducted through private agency TDP(L), as well as the students’ demand for a CBI investigation. The government has reportedly indicated willingness to seek an ED probe into alleged financial transactions and have the CID investigation monitored by a retired judge. Protesters, however, continue to insist on a CBI probe into alleged examination irregularities. The talks have also triggered a political controversy, with the non-political JPSC-JSSC Reform Forum objecting to separate negotiations with groups linked to political organisations. Protesters allege that multiple talks could divide the movement, while the ruling JMM has defended dialogue with different student organisations. The protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium now has separate camps associated with different groups, including the Reform Forum, the JPSC-JSSC Nyay Manch and AISA.
