Know History & Significance

On 22 December 2005, the UN General Assembly through resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the 21st century.

The UN convinced that the promotion of the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing is important for combating poverty. It announced December 20 of each year to be observed as the International Human Solidarity Day.

The basic purpose of International Human Solidarity Day is to promote the culture of cooperation, equality and social justice. The United Nation’s creation brought the nations and people of the world together to promote human rights, social and economic development and peace.

The theme of International Human Solidarity remains the same every year.

With initiatives such as the establishment of the World Solidarity Fund to eradicate poverty and the proclamation of International Human Solidarity Day, the concept of solidarity was promoted as crucial in the fight against poverty besides bringing all relevant stakeholders together.

It became part of the Trust Fund of the UN’s Development Program in February 2003.

The logo for the IHSD is designed considering the theme of this international event. It has four humans surrounding the earth with their arms outstretched. The different colors of the arms symbolises the unity in diversity.
