In June 2024, popular actor Hina Khan made the heartbreaking revelation that she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Since then, she has faced the illness with remarkable strength and resilience. In an interview with Screen, Hina candidly shared her journey, discussing the emotional toll of her diagnosis, the impact on her career, and the moments that gave her courage to fight.
Hina Khan on facing health challenges with cancer diagnosis
During the conversation, Hina opened up about the challenges she faced professionally due to her health. She said, “There were a couple of projects I was supposed to start, but after mutual discussions, we took a call. It’s not like this (cancer) will get cured in 2-3 months. It will take a year or even a year and a half. People have deadlines, so they had to replace me.
She added, "It was hard for them, but it was okay. I had to give up two projects, but at that time giving priority to my health was important. Getting better mattered. Initially, it affected me, but now it doesn’t bother me. I am back to work. It was a glitch, which I am handling.”
About Country of Blind
Providing an update on her film Country Of Blind, Hina shared how her health delayed its release in India. “Country Of Blind released abroad. It was supposed to be released in India before Griha Laxmi (her latest web show), but due to my health, it didn’t happen. Griha Laxmi was also supposed to be released in October but it got pushed. This big pause that had come was all because of my health.”
Hina also expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support she received throughout her journey. “I choke when I talk about the support I got from across the world. People have prayed for me, and I am truly touched,” she said.
Recalling her cancer diagnosis
Recalling the moment she first learned about her diagnosis, Hina described how it unfolded. “Ro (Rocky) came home and told me about the diagnosis. I was having dinner so he waited for me to finish, and then he broke the news. It took around 10 minutes for it to sink in. I just couldn’t believe what happened. I just put my head down and didn’t know what to do. Fifteen minutes before Ro came home, I had told my brother that after many years, I was craving to have falooda. We just ordered it. Till then I didn’t know anything because the doctor had directly called Rocky.”

Continuing, she added, “After he shared the news, nobody spoke a word. The news was going to consume me. Maybe I would have started crying, and then the bell rang. It was the falooda we ordered. At that moment I realised, this may sound silly to a lot of people, but that falooda was a turning point for me. I thought to myself, ‘Hina, that’s your life, you called for a falooda, enjoy it. This is just a glitch, a hiccup that can be dealt with, but that is your life. We will wake up and go back to that life.’ So, I asked my brother to unpack the falooda and we had it. We went to sleep, and the next day went to the doctor.”
Reflecting on her strength, Hina concluded, “I am proud that I switched so soon at that moment and understood that crying over this was not my life, but living life the usual way was where I had to go back to. I am very happy that I didn’t let such big news consume me and decided to fight.”
