Arun Govil Criticises Ranbir Kapoor’s Casting In Ramayana: 'Don’t Think Anyone Is Suitable To Play Lord Ram'

Veteran actor Arun Govil, who famously played Lord Ram, voices concern over modern actors like Ranbir Kapoor portraying Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana. Here’s what he said.

Veteran actor Arun Govil, immortalised in Indian television history for playing Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s 'Ramayana', has sparked a heated conversation with his recent remarks about Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming cinematic adaptation of the epic. In a candid interview, Govil questioned whether today’s actors – even the most prominent stars – are truly suited to portray Lord Ram on screen.

Govil’s concerns have come just as buzz around 'Ramayana', starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, continues to build. The film, which will release in two parts on Diwali 2026 and 2027, has already attracted massive attention for its star-studded cast and ambitious scope.

Maybe You Can Find Someone Outside the Industry

Speaking to NDTV, Govil expressed his reservations about the casting of modern actors in such spiritually significant roles. “Three-four people tried recreating it, but they were not successful. I don’t think in our lifetime someone should try to recreate Ramayan,” he said. His comments seemed particularly directed at the trend of high-budget adaptations following the controversial reception of Adipurush, in which Prabhas played Lord Ram.

Addressing the current generation of actors, he added, “As far as some actor playing Ram (is concerned), all the available actors, all the stars at this moment – I don’t think anyone is suitable. Maybe you can find someone outside the industry.”

Netizens React to Govil’s Candid Take

Unsurprisingly, the actor’s remarks have reignited debate on social media. While some agreed with Govil’s sentiment, pointing to his iconic portrayal as unmatched, others defended the evolving nature of cinematic interpretations, including the creative liberty filmmakers like Nitesh Tiwari are bringing to the table.

Ranbir Kapoor’s casting, in particular, has been met with mixed responses since the announcement, and Govil’s words have only added fuel to the discussion. Supporters of Tiwari’s vision, however, have urged fans to wait and see how the project unfolds on screen.

What We Know About Tiwari’s Ramayana

Despite the controversy, 'Ramayana' remains one of the most highly anticipated films of the decade. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor, the film stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Yash – who also co-produces the film – as Ravana. The ensemble also includes Lara Dutta, Anil Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor, and Amitabh Bachchan, though an official confirmation of the full cast is awaited.

For now, Arun Govil’s comments have cast a fresh spotlight on the delicate balance between reverence and reinvention in mythological storytelling.
