Suchitra Krishnamoorthi Issues Apology After Casting Doubt On Air India Crash Survivor
Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi drew criticism for questioning the credibility of Air India crash survivor Vishwas Ramesh. She later apologised for sharing unverified claims.

Actress and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi found herself in the middle of a social media storm on Thursday after questioning the identity of Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the only known survivor of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash. The tragedy, which took place in Ahmedabad on June 12, claimed over 270 lives. Vishwas's survival has been one of the few uplifting moments from the horrific incident.
In a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), Suchitra appeared to reference an unverified rumour that accused Vishwas of faking his story. “So this #vishwaskumarramesh lied about being a passenger on the plane & the only survivor? This is seriously weird. Didn’t his family in the UK corroborate his story? What about his brother’s funeral that he was seen giving kandha to?" she wrote. She went on to say that if the claims were true, he “deserved serious punishment or a mental asylum.

Social Media Reacts Swiftly to Unverified Claim
The post quickly attracted widespread criticism from netizens, journalists, and fact-checkers, who called her out for spreading false information. Many pointed out that Vishwas’s survival had already been confirmed by multiple credible sources, including the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where he was treated before being discharged on June 17.
As the backlash intensified, Suchitra removed the post and issued a clarification. “Took out my last tweet on the Air India crash survivor. Seems to be false news circulated for God knows what reason. My apologies," she posted. She also clarified that the misinformation had come from a friend and she regretted reposting it without checking the facts first.
Survivor’s Story Confirmed by Official Sources
Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old UK resident originally from Diu, had travelled to India with his brother Ajay. They were on the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff. Vishwas survived with injuries and led his brother's funeral procession the day after being discharged, even while visibly wounded and bandaged.
His resilience and emotional strength earned praise across the country, making the online doubts raised about his identity particularly hurtful to many.
Call for Online Responsibility Amid Public Platform Power
Suchitra, who remains active on social media and often shares her opinions on current affairs, faced criticism not just for the post, but for the tone and insensitivity of the remarks. Although her swift apology helped to de-escalate tensions, the incident has reignited conversations around the role of public figures in spreading unverified claims.

On the professional front, Suchitra was last seen in the Amazon Prime Video series Guilty Minds in 2022. While she has no confirmed new projects, she continues to be a visible voice in digital spaces.
With emotions still raw from the crash, the episode serves as a reminder that in times of tragedy, accuracy and empathy are paramount—especially when coming from people with influence.
