Satya Actor Makarand Deshpande Has An Answer To 'What Is Going Wrong With Ram Gopal Varma'

In a recent interview, Makarand Deshpande shed light on his friendship with the filmmaker-writer Ram Gopal Varma and what seems to have gone wrong with RGV.

New Delhi: Makarand Deshpande has worked with the likes of Ram Gopal Varma in ‘Satya’ and has been a friend for a long time. In an interaction with Sidharth Kannan, he shed light on his friendship with the filmmaker-writer and what seems to have gone wrong with RGV.

Makarand Deshpande on RGV

Calling him a compulsive rebel, Makarand Deshpande reinstated that RGV is a genius. “Maybe the choosing of people in his life and not the conveniences... sometimes Satya bhi to aise hi release hui thi. Aaj bhi voh kai bar aise banana chahte hai lekin kya voh log judte hai. Aisa nahi hai aaj bhi uski energy kum hai, mehnat utni khi karta hai, utan hi junoon hai… but he needs to make space for talent, and not be happy with his comfort and comvenience…Mujhe lagta hai agar Ramu lamba zinda raha to phir se ek kamal ki film banane wala hai because circular hai life uske beech mar gya to bat alag hai” ( Maybe it's about the people he chooses in his life and not just the conveniences...Even 'Satya' was released like that. Even today, he wants to make such films several times, but do those people join him? It's not that his energy is less today; he still works as hard, the passion is still there... but he needs to make space for talent and not just be content with his comfort and convenience... I feel if Ramu (referring to Ram Gopal Varma) remains alive for long, he will again make a wonderful film because life is circular. If he died in between, then it's a different story.)

Deshpande also recalled several anecdotes relating to the making of ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Huin’ and defending the allegation that ‘Ramu only lives in his films’.

On Ram Gopal Varma Losing It

“People talk about Ramu losing it or that he lives in films, ofcourse he lives films, but he also lives his life also. He is far more updated about current affairs, he can talk to you( referring to Kannan)  about war more than maybe any news channel and authentic, He can talk to you  about Salman Rushdie's last book, he can talk to you about Coppola's last film and more…’ Deshpande told Kannan in the same interaction.

Recalling another incident revolving around making the film ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti huin, which RGV wanted Makarand to make, Deshpande shared that after Makarand asked RGV to not interfere in the making of the film for 6 months, RGV said that he would want to know what was going on in the film but did not want to lose him as a friend and so Makarand did not do the film. Ever since then and even before the two have been close friends.
