Bollywood couple Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have been an honest critic of each other’s work. Amitabh once admitted that he wasn't too fond of a film that Jaya starred in.
Amitabh Bachchan didn't like Jaya Bachchan's comeback film
In a 1999 interview with Rediff, Amitabh discussed Jaya’s return to acting after a long hiatus. Jaya had taken a break from films to focus on raising their children. She made her comeback with the 1998 film ‘Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa’. While Amitabh praised her performance in the film, he was honest about not liking the movie itself. “I didn’t like the movie as such. I liked her performance,” Amitabh stated.
He elaborated on his critique, saying, “I felt it was too verbose. I felt: why did they have to make a film — they could have just written an article.” When the interviewer pointed out that this was a strong criticism, Amitabh responded, “I told this to her, and I told this to Govind Nihalani as well.”
Jaya Bachchan walked out of Mrityudata
Amitabh also mentioned that Jaya is an even tougher critic of his work. “She’s worse. She walks out,” he shared, admitting that Jaya had walked out of his 1997 film Mrityudata. “She didn’t sit through Mrityudata,” he confessed.
During the same interview, Amitabh explained why Jaya decided to return to acting. With their daughter Shweta married and their son Abhishek old enough to handle his own life, Jaya found more time for herself. “The home is adequately managed. The daughter is married and off. The son is six foot three inches, and capable of looking after himself. The husband remains more on location than at home. What does she do? She has to keep herself occupied. And so she chose to get back to acting,” he explained.
