'There’s No Smoke Without Fire': Amaal Mallik Reacts To Anu Malik #MeToo Accusations

Amaal Mallik discussed his strained relationship with his uncle, Anu Malik, following sexual harassment allegations against him during India's MeToo movement.

Music composer Amaal Mallik has spoken candidly about his strained ties with his uncle, music director Anu Malik, especially in light of the sexual harassment allegations that emerged against the latter during India’s MeToo movement.

In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal opened up about his silence during the controversy, his reasons for distancing himself from Anu Malik, and why he chooses to stay away from that side of his family.

Amaal Malik on #MeToo Allegations On Anu Malik

“I didn’t talk or support Anu Malik when he was accused during the MeToo movement. It was not my concern because I don’t consider him my family. I was very embarrassed when he was accused of these things. We never had a relationship. But I think if so many people raised their voice against him, I believe there must be some truth to it. Why would people come and say it otherwise? There is no smoke without fire. Five people can’t talk against the same person,” Amaal said.

The allegations against Anu Malik came to light when multiple women accused him of inappropriate behaviour during the peak of the MeToo movement in India.

“All the Girls Worked with Me Have Felt Safe”

Amaal, who has collaborated with numerous female artists, also recalled a conversation with his father during the time the allegations surfaced.

“Once my dad asked me if I too will be dragged in this movement. I said, there is no chance. I can never be the person who will ask for physical favours in return of songs. All the girls worked with me have felt safe.”

No Personal Bond with Anu Malik or His Family

When asked about his current equation with Anu Malik, Amaal said he maintains only a distant, respectful front.

“I am respectful towards him when I see him in public. But after knowing his wrongdoings, I am not in good terms with him. I don’t have any relationship with his family. I haven’t met them in years. I don’t attend parties. They were invited for Armaan’s wedding. They had come too. It is more like professional rivalry.”

Amaal Mallik also recently sparked conversations online after sharing that he had emotionally stepped away from his family, reinforcing his decision to keep a clear boundary where he feels it’s needed.
