'My Mom Doesn’t Get Why I’d Spend ₹1 Lakh In A Day’: Amaal Mallik On Clash With His Mother Over Spending Money

Amaal Mallik reveals his mother disapproves of his spending habits, including splurging ₹1 lakh in a day and ₹20K on dinners. He says he’s generous by nature, but his lifestyle worries his mom.

Amaal Mallik, known for his successful run as a music composer, recently opened up about his personal struggles related to money and family. In a podcast conversation, he spoke about his financial habits, his approach to spending, and how these have affected his relationship with his mother. Amaal, who had earlier made headlines for announcing (and later withdrawing) his decision to distance himself from his parents, shared that his spending choices often lead to disagreements at home.

Amaal Mallik on rift with his mother due to how he handles his finances

Speaking with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal reflected on his approach to finances and revealed that he was quite skilled at handling accounts in school. Despite having full control over his money today, he acknowledged a growing rift with his mother over the way he chooses to spend it.

“My mother has a very different relationship with money. She will never understand why the dinner bill is 20k or why I suddenly spent a lakh rupees in a single day. I am very transparent with my dad about what I spend, but I have to be careful around my mother, because she gets upset about my expenses.”

According to Amaal, his spending habits often clash with his mother's more conservative views. He described himself as someone who believes in living in the moment and doesn’t believe in pinching pennies when the occasion calls for celebration.

“Sometimes you are going to a party after a show, or I am taking my people out, so I spend a good amount. I am a very generous person in that sense; I don’t feel like I have to hold on to a lot of money. For me, it’s just a means to an end.”

Amaal added that while he doesn’t dismiss his mother’s concerns, he recognises that her mindset has been shaped by difficult financial experiences in the past. He recalled a time when his mother and grandfather had to survive on just Rs 500, following his father’s unsuccessful run in the music industry, a burden Amaal feels responsible to reverse.

Amaal says he let go of several payments over the years

Interestingly, the composer also shed light on the darker side of the industry, sharing how he's let go of several payments over the years without much fuss. According to him, many major producers often fall short on their financial commitments, while smaller ones tend to honour what little they promise.

“There are a lot of big producers who won’t clear almost 40% of your payment, but smaller producers who don’t even have budgets don’t do this. As long as there is intent, I don’t mind working with them. I am owed around Rs 25 lakh in total, but it doesn’t matter because God has been kind, and you can make this in one night and one performance,” said Amaal.
