This comes as Parsekar has been denied ticket by the BJP from the Mandrem Assembly constituency, which he had represented between 2002 and 2017.
New Delhi: Former Goa chief minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Laxmikant Parsekar, who was denied ticket for the upcoming state assembly elections, on Friday announced to resign from the party.
New agency ANI reported Parsekar, who was the chief minister of Goa between 2014 and 2017, as saying.
This comes as Parsekar has been denied ticket by the BJP from the Mandrem Assembly constituency, which he had represented between 2002 and 2017.
The saffron party has this time fielded sitting MLA Dayanand Sopte, who defected to the BJP from Congress earlier in 2018, from Mandrem.
65-year-old Parsekar, who is the convener of BJP’s manifesto committee and a member of the core committee, is likely to contest as an independent this time.
Parsekar was given the top post in Goa after the then chief minister Manohar Parrikar was inducted into the Union Cabinet as the Defence Minister.
This comes a day after Utpal Parrikar, the son of Manohar Parrikar, resigned from the BJP after the party refused to offer him ticket for the Panaji seat in the upcoming assembly polls.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of the 34 candidates for the assembly elections in Goa.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will contest from the Sanquelim constituency, while the BJP has fielded his deputy Manohar Ajgaonkar will be contesting from Margao assembly seat.
The BJP’s list of 34 candidates has nine candidates from the minority community.
Polling for the 40-member Goa Assembly will take place in a single phase on February 14.
The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
