Erode East Bypolls Date: The Election Commission of India announced the date for Erode East bypolls on Tuesday. The election was necessitated after the death of its sitting MLA EVKS Elangovan, who was a senior Congress leader and the great grandson of rationalist EV Ramaswamy Periyar.
The Erode Byelection will be held on Feburary 5, according to Election Commission of India. The counting of votes will take place on Feburary 8. The Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the last date for filing nominations would be January 17 while the papers would be scrutinized on January 18. The last date of withdrawal of candidates would be on January 20.
EVKS Elangovan passed away due to lung infection on December 14, 2024. He was 75.
This is the second time the seat is set to witness elections in three years. Earlier, EVKS Elangovan won the seat in a bypoll which was held after the death of the then sitting MLA Evera Thirumagan, who was also the son of EVKS Elangovan. In January 2023, Thirumagan Evera complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. However, he passed away due to a cardiac arrest.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin visited Erode district on December 19 and 20, 2024, to bolster the party's position ahead of the upcoming bypoll and 2026 Assembly elections. During his visit, Stalin held a series of meetings with senior DMK leaders, assessing the party's performance in Erode during the 2021 Assembly elections, as per a report on IANS. He urged party workers to address weaknesses in constituencies across the district, particularly those lost to the AIADMK or won by narrow margins.
Currently, the DMK-led alliance holds a total of 159 seats in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, with DMK accounting for 133 seats, Congress 18, VCK 4, CPI 2, and CPI(M) 2. The alliance achieved an impressive vote share of 45.38% in the last state assembly elections.
