Newborn Dies In UP's Jhansi After Treatment Is Denied As Father Runs Back & Forth Between Hospitals

A father in Uttar Pradesh desperately searched for treatment for his newborn daughter for five hours, being turned away by both Jhansi District Hospital and the Medical College.

Jhansi news: The Uttar Pradesh government may claim that health services in the state are improving, but a picture has emerged in Jhansi that exposes these claims. In Jhansi, a man had to run from pillar to post for five hours seeking help in getting treatment for his newborn daughter.

Despite all his efforts, the man could not save his daughter. The baby died in the ambulance. The case has come to light from the Jhansi Maharani Laxmibai Medical College.

The weeping father alleged that his newborn daughter died in the ambulance due to lack of treatment. He said that the girl was born at the medical college on Friday morning.

Sonu Parihar, a resident of Talau village in the Madawara police station area of Lalitpur district, said that he had been wandering around for about 5 hours in an ambulance with his newborn daughter in his arms to save her life. Neither the Jhansi District Hospital nor the Medical College agreed to admit the girl, he said.

Due to the delay and neglect, the newborn girl died in the ambulance. Sonu said that on Thursday evening, his wife went into labour. He first took his wife to Lalitpur District Hospital.

There, his wife's blood pressure was found to have been rising rapidly and her condition was deteriorating. So, the doctors referred her to Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi. He reached Jhansi Medical College around 2 AM. The doctors there performed a C-section surgery around 7 AM on Friday and delivered the baby. However, after birth, the baby was having difficulty in breathing.

Despite the baby's condition, the hospital allegedly refused to admit her. According to Sonu, the doctors said that she needed oxygen and ventilator support. But there was no vacancy in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) ward of the medical college. Due to this, the doctors referred her to the district hospital.

But when Sonu reached the district hospital with the newborn in a private ambulance, he was met with shock and disappointment as he was turned away by the authorities there as well. The hospital cited the lack of beds and sent him back to Jhansi Medical College.

When Sonu asked for the girl to be admitted to the emergency, he was refused there as well. The girl eventually passed away in Sonu's arms

Chief Medical Superintendant at JMS Sachin Mahour said the patient (Sonu's wife), Rajabati, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday night in poor health. "On Friday morning, a girl was born to her. She had many abnormalities since the beginning. The girl was also having trouble breathing. Due to this, she was referred to the district hospital. She might not have been admitted there. By the time she returned, the girl was dead. When they came here, they did not contact any doctor. Our NICU is still under construction and is not ready. This is why they were referred to the district hospital."
