The devastating aviation disaster unfolded in Ahmedabad when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London, Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. It plunged into the densely populated Meghani Nagar area.
'Mayday' Call Moments Before Crash
The ill-fated flight departed from runway 23 at 1:39 pm, fully fueled for its long-haul journey to London. Within minutes, the pilots — Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an experienced aviator with over 8,200 flight hours, and First Officer Clive Kundar — issued a "Mayday" distress call. The Air Traffic Control received no further communication from the cockpit after the distress call, and the aircraft lost radar contact at an altitude of just 825 feet before descending rapidly.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the plane veered sharply and crashed into the Meghani area, a bustling residential neighbourhood near the airport. A loud explosion rocked the vicinity, followed by thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from miles away. Residents rushed to the site, some risking their own safety to assist emergency crews as flames engulfed the wreckage.

Swift Emergency Response
Within minutes, the area was flooded with fire engines, ambulances, and police units. At least two dozen ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals, while authorities cordoned off access roads to facilitate rescue operations. The massive fire, fuelled by the aircraft's full tanks, complicated efforts to reach survivors and contain the blaze.
As of now, officials have not confirmed the number of casualties, and the precise cause of the crash remains under investigation.
