Trade Union Worker Killed In Kerala's Pathanamthitta, Three In Custody; Probe On

According to initial investigations, the murder is suspected to have been triggered by a previous altercation that took place several days ago. Two others sustained injuries in the incident.

A headload worker associated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions was stabbed to death in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, police said on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Jithin (35), resident of Mampara in Perunad. He was an active member of the CITU, a trade union federation aligned with CPI(M).

The incident occurred at around 10:00 PM on Sunday, following an altercation between two groups in Kochupalam area near Perunad. Police told news agency PTI that they have taken three individuals into custody in connection with the incident.

Jithin, who sustained serious stab wounds, was initially taken to a government hospital in Perunad before being transferred to a private medical facility in Pathanamthitta. However, he died from his injuries.

Authorities suspect involvement of additional persons for which an investigation is underway. While some reports hint at the involvement of BJP-RSS workers in the clash, police have rejected political angle, noting that those in custody represent various political affiliations.

Two others sustained injuries in the incident, out of whom one is receiving treatment at Pathanamthitta General Hospital.
