New Delhi: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Tuesday shared three essential learning's from his father, late Dhirubhai Ambani, in terms of building Reliance Industries (RIL), India's most valued firm, during a virtual interaction with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at the first edition of Facebook Fuel 2020 for India. While praising Dhirubhai's legacy, Zuckerberg asked Ambani about crucial learning from his father, and Ambani shared the three success mantra. In 2000, Dhirubhai asked can you make a voice at the cost of a postcard.
"In 2020, we're very proud that Jio has pioneered free voice. So, all 400 million people are a tribute to his vision. They are on our network and have a free voice. And as you said, my father was a son of a school teacher. He came to Mumbai with just a thousand rupees in 1960 and established Reliance with a belief that I will invest in businesses of the future, and I will invest in talent," said Ambani.
Talking about his learning in building Reliance, Ambani shared the three basic tenets for the next generation: courage and self-belief, empathy and creativity, and the importance of relationship, trust, and loyalty.
"One is, for entrepreneurs, it's important to have courage and self-belief. And all of us know as entrepreneurs that we don't succeed at the first attempt, and self-belief comes to you when you fail. And self-belief increases your confidence when you succeed. So, courage and self-belief is something that I always tell entrepreneurs, remember that it's important," said Ambani.
The second piece that Mukesh Ambani learned from his father is to always have empathy and creativity in everything you do.
"And by empathy, I mean, put yourself in the other's shoe, and make sure that how you make them feel is how you would want to feel. At Reliance, we do that at many levels now - we care for our employees, our investors, society, environment, and above all national interests of India," said Ambani.

Citing an example of creativity, Mr. Ambani said when Reliance needed to grow, capital markets were not there. It was the 1980s, and his father came up with the idea of sharing shares of Reliance, which was never done in the private sector. In the 80s, the first AGM of Reliance was in a football ground, attended by 60,000 shareholders.
"And his AGM in the 1980s for Reliance was in a football ground, and he said, my purpose is really to win investor's confidence. Since then, creativity and empathy are critical as you go along," said Ambani.
The final thing that Mukesh Ambani picked up from his father was the importance of relationship, trust, and loyalty.
"The whole of Reliance right now, with hundreds of thousands of people, is one big family. We're not related by birth, but we are woven together by passion, purpose, and conviction. We have faith in one another. We are loyal to one another, to this large Reliance family. For us, it's always one for all and all for one. And I hope that a lot of people around the world can relate to this. That's what we believe at Reliance, and for all of us at Reliance, he will still be the founder if we follow his vision in terms of investing in businesses of the future," said Ambani.
