Ford Gears Up For Export Expansion With Chennai Manufacturing Plant

Ford has formally informed the Tamil Nadu government of this decision through a Letter of Intent

American automaker Ford announced on Friday that it is preparing to utilise its Chennai manufacturing plant for vehicle exports, marking a strategic shift from its previous plans. The company has formally informed the Tamil Nadu government of this decision through a Letter of Intent (LOI).

This development comes after a meeting between Ford's leadership and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin during his recent visit to the United States. Ford's International Markets Group President, Kay Hart, highlighted that this move highlights Ford's ongoing commitment to India, leveraging the region’s manufacturing expertise to cater to new global markets.

Stalin visited Ford's headquarters in Michigan on Tuesday, where he met with senior management to advocate for the revival of production. On X (formerly Twitter), he stated, "Had a very productive discussion with the Ford Motors team. We explored the possibility of renewing Ford's three-decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, aiming to once again produce in Tamil Nadu for the global market."

Under the new plan, the Chennai plant will be repurposed to focus on export-oriented production as part of Ford’s 'Ford+ growth plan'. Specific details regarding the types of vehicles to be manufactured and other aspects of the operation will be revealed in the future.

Ford’s announcement underscores its dedication to maintaining India as a key market within its global operations. The company, which currently employs 12,000 individuals in Tamil Nadu, anticipates creating an additional 2,500 to 3,000 jobs over the next three years. This expansion is expected to bolster Ford’s position as the second-largest salaried workforce location outside the United States, following its engine manufacturing operations in Sanand.

The decision marks a significant turnaround from Ford's 2021 announcement that it would cease vehicle production in India, shifting focus to importing vehicles instead. Although Ford sold its Sanand plant to Tata Motors, it has faced delays in winding down its Chennai operations, initially planned for the second quarter of 2022.
