New Delhi: The tragic accident involving former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry has again raised concerns about road safety in India. Four passengers were in the luxury car involved in the accident wherein the front passengers survived with injuries and the two passengers at the rear seats died on the spot.

The accident happened about 110 km from Mumbai on the Surya river bridge when the Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV they were in, crashed onto a divider.

Regarding the safety of their vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz GLC in which the four passengers were travelling is a luxury SUV. It is also one of the most popular models within the Mercedes-Benz brand and is deemed one of the safest in terms of cash test rating.

The GLC, which comes in 220d 4Matic and 300 4Matic form, has the highest safety rating with a 5-star rating in the tougher Euro NCAP tests.

That is due to many safety features, multiple airbags, and a bonnet system that braces for impact more. There is also a Pre-safe system that anticipates a collision and tightens the seatbelts, headrest adjustment, and more. Alongside airbags, the GLC also has a knee bag that protects occupants from contact with the steering column in case of a crash. In total, the GLC has seven airbags,

In terms of the accident, it is reported that the airbags were deployed while the preliminary probe stated that the driver appeared to lost control. It is recommended that rear passengers should wear seatbelts as that could make a major role in saving their lives in the event of an accident.

Road safety continues to be a concern with over 1.55 lakh lives lost last year due to road accidents and over 4 lakh injured. Out of this, overtaking, dangerous driving, and speeding is a massive contributor.

Prima facie, the luxury car, being driven by Mumbai-based gynaecologist Anahita Pandole, was speeding. It covered 20 km of distance in just 9 minutes after crossing the Charoti check post in the Palghar district, 120 km away from Mumbai, the police said. The car hit a road divider on the bridge on the Surya river, killing Mistry (54) and Jahangir Pandole on the spot.

"As per the preliminary investigation, overspeeding and the error of judgement caused the car accident. Both the deceased were not wearing seat belts," news agency PTI reported an officer as saying.

An eye-witness reported that a woman was driving the car and tried to overtake another vehicle from the left side, but lost control and crashed into the road divider.

As per news agency ANI, the last rites of the former Tata Sons Chairman will be performed tomorrow at 10 am at Worli crematorium in Mumbai.
