Commuters Don't Need To Carry Driving License, RC If Documents Placed In Digilocker Or M-Parivahan

While this was not legally recognized before, drivers will now be able to digitally show their documents.

New Delhi: The Central Government has taken an important decision and given relief to drivers across the country. After the government's decision, there will be no need to carry driving licences (DL) and registration certificates (RC) while driving across the country, including Delhi-NCR (Delhi-NCR).

Drivers can now show documents digitally placed in Digilocker or m-Parivahan mobile app to traffic police and transport department.

Legal Recognition Received

Following an order issued by the Union Ministry of Transport and Highways, documents saved in the m-Parivahan app and DigiLocker will now be considered valid in all states. Government has now made this decision legal. The government is informing people by taking out advertisements in newspapers in all states and Union Territories.

According to the government, traffic police can't force you to show them the physical copy of your driving license or RC if you show your documents in DigiLocker and m-Parivahan.

As per the government order, digital driving license and Registration Certificate (RC) on Digilocker or m-Parivahan mobile app, are considered valid documents under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The documents stored in these two platforms will be at par with the certificates issued by the transport department.

Documents on Digital Platform are Valid

A notice issued by the transport department said that the Traffic Police and Enforcement Wing of Transport Department duly accept the electronic form of driving license and registration certificate if shown in the Digilocker and m-Parivahan app.

The notice mentioned that the electronic record of driving license and registration certificate available on Digilocker, or m-Parivahan, is also recognised at par with the original documents as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

While a soft copy stored on the government-approved apps, Digilocker and m-Parivahan, is safe and legally valid, a soft copy of your driving documents maintained in any other apps is not acceptable as the original documents.
