Trending: Girl To Get Rs 2.5 Crore After Officials Slaughter Her 'Beloved' Pet Goat

The woman had bought the goat for her daughter who called him Cedar or Cedes. The girl initially raised the goat to be auctioned at the Shasta District Fair but got attached to the cattle.

The California County Sheriff’s office has been ordered to pay $300,000 (Rs 2.5 crore) to a nine-year-old girl whose pet goat was seized and slaughtered, the New York Times reported. The girl's mother had sued the Shasta County Sheriff's Office that auctioned the goat. She had also filed a complaint against some of its employees in 2022 for taking "a young girl’s beloved pet goat".

The woman had bought the goat for her daughter who called him Cedar or Cedes. The girl initially raised the goat to be auctioned at the Shasta District Fair but got attached to the cattle over some time. The girl had been feeding and walking with the goat on a leash everywhere and did not want to sell him, the report said.

Goat Was Taken To A Farm To Be Kept Safe

The mother even took Cedar to a farm 320 kilometres away in Sonoma County to be kept safe.

Court documents showed that fair officials refused to withdraw the sale, the news report added. Two Shasta County Sheriff's deputies drove to the farm and seized the goat. The law enforcement officers did not have a warrant to search the farm and seize Cedar, the court documents added. The family's lawyer said Cedar was eventually slaughtered but where his remains ended up is still unknown.

"They can never get justice for Cedar, he's gone," the lawyer said. The Shasta County admitted no wrongdoing and said the lawsuit against the Shasta District Fair and some of its workers remains pending.

The girl's mother said she was inconsolable after Cedar was sold for $902, of which the fair was owed $63. The girl cried under the bed as the goat was eventually slaughtered, as per the mother.
