WhatsApp To Soon Allow Reverse Image Search Through Google? Here's What We Know

WhatsApp’s new 'Search on web' feature allows users to easily send images for reverse image searches on Google directly within the app.

Meta is said to be working on a new WhatsApp feature that allows users to search for shared images directly online. As reported by WABetaInfo, this tool will help users check the authenticity of images received on the platform, making it easier to determine if any alterations or misrepresentations have occurred. Currently, the feature is being rolled out to a limited group of users through the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, where it’s available for testing.

WhatsApp New Feature: Image Web Search

WhatsApp’s new 'Search on web' feature allows users to easily send images for reverse image searches on Google directly within the app. This feature functions similarly to Google’s traditional reverse image search but is more streamlined as it eliminates the need to download and upload images separately via a browser or app. Users can now quickly search for context without leaving WhatsApp.

Designed to promote transparency, this feature helps users gain more insight into the images shared in their conversations. By performing a reverse image search, they can verify whether an image has been manipulated or taken out of context, providing an added layer of security and trust in the information being shared.

WhatsApp's Image Web Search: Availability, How To Use

The "Search on web" feature is currently available on WhatsApp beta for Android, specifically, version 2.24.23.13, which is accessible to a limited group of beta testers through the Google Play Store. According to reports, WhatsApp intends to expand access to this feature in the coming weeks. However, there is no official information yet on when it will be available for WhatsApp users on iOS. Here's how you can use it:

  • Open image received in your chatbox
  • Click on the three-dot button in the top right corner
  • Click on the 'Search on the web' option
  • Click on 'Search' to initiate a reverse image search on Google.
