Uber Says Users Can Cancel Trip Even If Car Arrives At Pickup Point, Details Passenger Safety Guidelines

Uber might impose a cancellation fee initially, a refund for which can be arranged for via the app.

In a bid to prioritise passenger safety, Uber has implemented a policy in India that permits riders to cancel rides without incurring charges, even after the driver has arrived at the designated pickup location. This initiative aligns with Uber's emphasis on safeguarding passengers and fostering a security-centric environment. Uber India's Customer Experience Director for the region, Mansi Chadha, unveiled these safety-driven guidelines.

In an interview with India Today, Chadha stated, "Cancellation fee is charged to compensate drivers, but if there are safety concerns, riders should cancel the ride without even thinking about it. Also, simultaneously users should raise the issues to the Uber 24x7 safety line so that the safety team can look into the matter and the cancellation fee is waived off."

Notably, under this scheme, a cancellation fee might still be imposed initially. However, if riders swiftly request a refund citing safety apprehensions, the cancellation charge will be promptly reversed.

According to Chadha, the cancellation fee typically compensates drivers; nevertheless, she emphasised that when safety concerns arise, passengers should prioritise cancelling the ride without hesitation. Concurrently, users are encouraged to report these issues to the Uber 24x7 safety line (accessible only via the Uber app), facilitating a thorough investigation by the safety team and potentially waiving the cancellation fee.

It should be noted here that this feature existed all along, as users could raise disputes with fares or cancellation charges earlier too.

Uber's Head of Safety Operations for India and South Asia, Sooraj Nair, reinforced these guidelines. He detailed the specific circumstances where passengers can safely cancel an Uber ride after the driver's arrival:

Offline Ride Requests: If a driver insists on taking the ride offline, passengers are advised to cancel and rebook, as Uber's safety features are only operational during online trips.

Vehicle Details Mismatch: If the vehicle details do not align with the app information, passengers are recommended to cancel the ride due to potential security risks.

Driver Identity Discrepancy: If the driver's appearance does not match the app's image, passengers should cancel the ride to prioritise safety.

Non-Compliance with Payment Method: Should a driver refuse the set payment method and demand alternative payment, riders are encouraged to cancel the ride due to policy violations.

Excessive Fare Demands: In cases where the driver demands a fare beyond the app-calculated amount, passengers are advised to cancel, as this contravenes Uber's fare policy.

Inadequate Rear Seatbelts: Passengers can cancel a ride if they find the rear seatbelts non-functional or missing, as per Uber's newly implemented safety regulation. Similar measures apply to Moto rides, requiring functional helmets for pillion riders.

While Uber maintains that cancellation fees are typically applicable, in instances of safety-related cancellations, riders can request refunds through the following steps:

Step 1: After cancelling the trip, access the 'Trips' section in the Uber app.

Step 2: Select the cancelled trip and view the charged cancellation fee. Tap 'Get trip help?'

Step 3: Opt for 'Dispute my cancellation fee' among the options.

Step 4: Choose 'Review my cancellation fee' and submit the request.

Step 5: Select the specific cancellation reason from the provided list and submit.

Uber assures that for all scenarios outlined, riders can review and promptly obtain a refund of the cancellation fee. In the majority of cases, the refund process is immediate.
