Elon Musk's X Cuts Subscription Prices In India: Find Out Why
X has slashed its Basic, Premium, and Premium+ subscription plans in India, with discounts of up to 47 percent. The move aims to boost uptake and grow non‑advertising revenue.

Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has significantly reduced its subscription prices in India, slashing costs across three tiers. The move, unveiled on 11 July, signals a strategic attempt to expand the platform’s user base and diversify revenue sources in the country’s fast-growing social media market.
Aggressive Price Cuts Across Tiers
X has lowered the price of its Basic tier to Rs 170 per month (Rs 1,700 annually), down from Rs 244 per month (Rs 2,591 annually), marking a 30 percent reduction.
The Premium tier now costs Rs 427 per month (Rs 4,272 annually), a drop of around 34 percent from its previous Rs 650 monthly rate (Rs 6,800 annually).
The top-tier Premium+ plan has seen a 26 percent decrease, slashing the monthly fee from Rs 3,470 to Rs 2,570, and the yearly cost from Rs 34,340 to Rs 26,400.
Significant Discounts on Mobile Apps
The reductions are notable as they account for in-app purchase commissions on Android and iOS. On mobile, the Premium tier is priced at Rs 470 per month — a 47 percent discount from the earlier Rs 900 rate — while Premium+ is Rs 3,000 per month on the app, down 42 percent from Rs 5,130.
Despite this, the Basic tier remains consistent across web and mobile at Rs 170 per month.
What Each Tier Offers
Basic subscribers retain features like post editing, longer uploads, reply prioritisation, formatted text, and interface customisation. The Premium tier adds perks such as professional creator tools — including X Pro, analytics, media studio access, a blue checkmark, fewer ads, and increased access to Grok AI.
Premium+ offers the full experience: an ad-free feed in both Following and For You tabs, the highest reply visibility, article writing capabilities, and early access to real-time Trends via Radar.
Strategic Shift In Revenue Model
X’s decision to lower subscription fees appears to be part of a broader strategy to shift from advertising dependence to a more diversified income stream.
By offering more affordable access to enhanced features and tools, especially to India’s price-sensitive user base, X aims to accelerate the adoption of paid subscriptions.
What Users And Creators Gain
For users, the price cuts mean attainable access to premium functionalities such as Grok AI and ad-free browsing.
Content creators, meanwhile, stand to benefit from wider distribution of tools like analytics and media studio features, which could support growth and monetisation efforts.
