Elon Musk-Owned X Rolls Out Parody Account Labels, Here's How You Can Apply It On Your Profile

The 'Parody Account' label will be displayed beneath a user’s profile and on their posts.

X (formerly Twitter) has introduced new account labels specifically for parody and satire accounts, as announced on Friday. These labels, initially rolled out last year as visual indicators to categorise accounts, aim to enhance content transparency and reduce impersonation.

The newly introduced "Parody Account" label distinguishes parody or satire profiles from authentic ones, aligning with the platform's authenticity and transparency policies.

X New Feature: Parody Labels

The official X Safety account shared details about the update in a post. According to the announcement, the "Parody Account" label will be displayed beneath a user’s profile and on their posts. This feature is designed to help users identify parody profiles, avoid confusion, and clarify that these accounts are not affiliated with the individuals or entities they satirise.

X further stated that this measure complies with its Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) policy. While the platform permits parody accounts to share, critique, or satirize content without requiring them to display real identities, it strictly prohibits impersonation intended to deceive others. The labels are part of X's ongoing efforts to clearly indicate the source and nature of content shared on the platform.

X owner Elon Musk has been an advocate for such identifiers for a long time. Back in 2022, he emphasised that “accounts engaged in parody must include ‘parody' in their name, not just in bio”.

Notably, these labels are not mandatory at this time. X users will be informed when it becomes mandatory.

How To Apply Parody Account Label By Yourself

At present, they can apply the labels themselves by navigating to Settings and Privacy > Your account > Account information, and choosing the “Parody, commentary, and fan account” label.

If any accounts are found to be inauthentic or impersonating an entity, X users can report them via the app or Help Centre.
