Earthquake Alert On Phones: How To Enable Push Notifications For Tremors On Your Android, iOS

While earthquakes cannot be predicted, smartphone alert systems serve as vital tools in reducing risk and enhancing preparedness in vulnerable regions.

As the world woke up to consecutive 4.0-magnitude earthquakes in Delhi-NCR and Siwan, Bihar early Monday, the need for early warning systems has now become a dire necessity for enhanced preparedness. Most modern phones nowadays come with sensors to help detect sudden tremors, at least the major ones and warn you of emergency actions.

In earthquake-prone areas, staying informed can be lifesaving. Many modern smartphones come equipped with accelerometers that detect seismic activity. By enabling earthquake alerts, users can receive early notifications, providing crucial seconds to take safety measures.

How Smartphone Earthquake Alerts Function

Built-in motion sensors in smartphones can recognise vibrations associated with seismic activity. When a tremor is detected, data is transmitted to a central server, which then sends notifications to users in the affected area. These alerts can offer critical warnings ahead of stronger shaking, allowing people to act swiftly.

Activating Earthquake Alerts on Android

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Navigate to Safety & Emergency settings.
  • Toggle Earthquake Alerts on.

Activating Earthquake Alerts On iPhone

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap on Notifications.
  • Scroll down and enable Emergency Alerts.

Additional Alerts With MyShake App

For those seeking enhanced alerts, the MyShake app provides additional earthquake warning features:

  • Available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
  • Users need to follow the setup guide and allow location access.
  • The app utilises ground sensor networks to issue warnings for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above.

How Google’s Earthquake Alert System Works

Google employs two types of notifications for earthquake detection:

  • Be Aware Alerts: Issued for minor tremors (MMI 3 & 4).
  • Take Action Alerts: Sent for stronger quakes (MMI 5+), urging users to take protective measures, such as seeking shelter under sturdy furniture.

While earthquakes cannot be predicted, these alert systems serve as vital tools in reducing risk and enhancing preparedness in vulnerable regions.
