iOS 18 Users Report Major CarPlay Compatibility Issues On iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro Max, More Models: Here's How To Fix
Users on forums like Apple Discussions are reporting frequent connection drops, audio glitches, and interface lags while using CarPlay with the iOS 18 update.
iOS 18 has started rolling out on compatible iPhone models. However, some Apple users are encountering widespread problems with CarPlay, the feature that converts your car display into an iPhone-like interface to control media playback, connect calls, and other handy functions. Users on forums like Apple Discussions report frequent connection drops, audio glitches, and interface lags while using CarPlay with the iOS 18 update. In some cases, the latest iPhone 16 Pro Max isn't even being recognised by CarPlay, despite being connected via a USB-C cable.
What Issues Are iOS Users Flagging?
An iPhone 16 Pro Max user, going by username Logan T2, took to Apple Discussions forum to flag that his handset is not getting recognised via a wired connection on CarPlay. Surprisingly, his older iPhone 13 Pro Max model (with iOS 18) is getting recognised without a hitch, but the latest iPhone 16 Pro Max with iOS 18 is simply not connecting.
"Very weird. And I’m seeing reports about this all over forums and from friends. My wife’s iPhone 16 Pro Max also is not recognised on my CarPlay anymore either," he wrote on the forum.
Another user (JD885), who has an iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18, is facing the same issue on his Honda HRV Sport. "CarPlay using a wired connection was working perfectly through iOS 17.7. After updating to iOS 18, the car no longer recognises the phone," the user wrote.
This user even tried unpairing and re-pairing the handset in his car system settings. He also tried using different types of "genuine" Apple cables to connect his phone, but to no avail. "I have to assume it's a bug/incompatibility issue with Carplay in iOS 18 and my car," the user wrote.
Another user (jjulian1084) shared that he is facing a similar issue with his iPhone 14 Pro, where his infotainment system would crash after connection, making him unable to listen to music.
Apple has yet to respond officially, but users are hopeful for a fix in the next software patch.
How To Fix CarPlay Compatibility Issue With iOS 18
While it is highly advised that iOS 18 users should wait for a bug fix from Apple via an OTA update, there are certain steps you can take to check if your phone becomes compatible again:
- Disable VPNs: VPNs may interfere with CarPlay connectivity. Consider turning them off or uninstalling them.
- Rename Your iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About > Name and change your device's name, as your car might be trying to reconnect to the previous name.
- Forget and Reconnect: Have both your car and iPhone "forget" each other in Settings > General > CarPlay, then set up the connection again.
These steps may help restore seamless CarPlay functionality.
