'Malda Tragedy Should Have Broken CM Mamata's Heart': BJP, CPM Slam TMC Over Video Of Women Being Thrashed

A video from West Bengal's Malda district is going viral where two women could be seen being thrashed, beaten and their clothes being torn apart by other women.

Amir rising outcry over the viral video of women being paraded naked in Manipur, a similar video of two women being beaten by other women in West Bengal's Malda has emerged on social media fuelling the ongoing anger among the citizens. In the viral video, the women can be seen beating the two ladies and stripping them naked. One of them is nearly naked and continues to cover her body while others shoot the video and pull their hair and thrash them with slippers.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to Twitter and shared the video. He said that two Tribal women were stripped naked, tortured and beaten mercilessly, while police remained a mute spectator in the Pakua Hat area of Bamangola Police Station, Malda.

Attacking CM Mamata Banerjee, Malviya said that she chose to do nothing. "Neither did she condemn the barbarity nor did she express pain and anguish because it would have exposed her own failing as a Chief Minister," he added.

Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned Congress's 'silence' over the viral video from Malda and called the party a 'mute spectator'.

"This (Manipur viral video) issue is not only sensitive but has implications with regard to national security and is known to the opposition leaders. However, the opposition did not want to discuss the issue on the floor of the Parliament. What is extremely alarming is that yesterday, from the state of Rajasthan, a minister spoke up on crime against women in the state, he was unceremoniously dismissed by the Congress. Equally shocking is a video that is emanating from West Bengal's Malda where two Dalit women are being beaten & stripped. Congress did not want to hear the truth about atrocities against women in the state of Rajasthan...Congress is a mute spectator to the killings of people during the West Bengal Panchayat elections all because it is hungry for collaboration with TMC," Irani told the media in Mumbai.

Reacting to it, state minister Shashi Panja said that there was no need to politicise the incident. She said that it was a case of theft where the two ladies tried stealing from the market and other women started thrashing them. Panja mentioned that a case has been registered into the matter.

"There is absolutely no need to politicise the Malda incident. It was a case of theft, where the two ladies tried to steal something from the market. A group of women tried to take law & order into their hands and started beating them. However, the police reached the spot. A case has been registered & police are investigating the matter," the TMC leader told ANI.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat said that the incident in Malda should not be compared to the Manipur one. She said this shows the lawlessness in the state of West Bengal.

"Malda's incident should not be compared to that of Manipur. Atrocities against women in any part of the country are condemnable...West Bengal's incident where 'Adivasi' women can be seen beating other 'Adivasi' women is condemnable...It is just an example of West Bengal govt's lawlessness..," Karat told ANI.

Karat also slammed BJP and said that the saffron party's IT cell is trying to compare the two incidents which is condemnable.
