IMD Issues Orange Alert For Heavy Rain In Several Kerala Districts, Issues Warning To Karnataka & Maharashtra

The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Maharashtra and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka over the next five days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in three districts of Kerala including Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Friday. On Saturday, the IMD extended its alert to Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod.

A yellow alert, indicating moderate rain, has been issued for several other districts. For Friday, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasargod are under the Yellow alert. For Saturday, the alert covers Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram.

The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Maharashtra and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka over the next five days. Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Northwest India over the next two days.

Meteorological factors contributing to these conditions include a shear zone along 16°N in the lower and middle tropospheric levels, a cyclonic circulation over south Telangana and neighboring areas, and a trough extending from south Maharashtra to the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast.

Under these influences, IMD said, "Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph), is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, and Lakshadweep. Isolated light to moderate rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next five days."

"Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Kerala & Mahe from June 7-9, South Interior Karnataka from June 7-9, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on June 7, Telangana on June 7 and 10, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema on June 7, 2024. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala & Mahe on June 7 and 8, 2024," IMD added.

Additionally, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka from June 7-11. Isolated places in these regions, as well as in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana, are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.
