Drafting Of Uniform Civil Code For Uttarakhand Completed, To Be Submitted To State Govt

A member of the UCC draft committee, retired SC Justice Desai has said that the draft of the proposed UCC for Uttarakhand has been completed and will be submitted to the state government soon.

The draft of the proposed Uniform Civil Code for Uttarakhand has been completed and will be submitted to the state government soon, a member of the UCC draft committee, retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has said. She said, "It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that the drafting of the proposed Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand is now complete. The report of the expert committee along with the draft will be printed and submitted to the Government of Uttarakhand."

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that for preparing the UCC draft the committee went among people and worked on it for a year after speaking to more than 2 lakh people. "The UCC drafting committee went among people and worked for over a year. It spoke to more than 2 lakh people - several stakeholders, organisations & intellectuals. After this, their draft is in the making. It is about to complete, once we get it we will examine it. We will discuss with the experts and take further course of action," Dhami said, as quoted by the news agency ANI.

The Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, sex, gender and sexual orientation. Currently, the personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures.

Also, on June 14, the Law Commission of India solicited the views and ideas of the public and recognised religious organisations to examine the Uniform Civil Code.
