Torch relay for Asian Games 2018 begins

New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): The torch relay for the much awaited Asian Games 2018 began on Sunday from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

The multi sport-event will begin on August 18 in Indonesia's Jakarta city.

While addressing a gathering here, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general Rajeev Mehta promised to encourage sports and sportsmen in the country.

"This day marks a special moment for our Indian athletics. Since 1950 this tradition is being carried on and I hope this continues as our relationship is strong. We are also marked as the finest among Asian countries in sports," Mehta hailed.

"This event will make it way through 51 cities in Indonesia, finally ending in Jakarta on the games' opening day on August 18," he added.

Meanwhile, IOA president Narinder Batra said congratulated Mehta and his team for all the hard work and dedication put for the event.

Boxer M.C Mary Kom, hockey captain PR Sreejesh, shooter Jitu Rai and other sports-persons participated in the torch relay.

Jakarta, which was also the host city for the first time in 1962, will host 29 sports competitions.

The Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. (ANI)
