Sri Lanka suspend Gunathilaka for violating code of conduct

Colombo [Sri Lanka], July 23 (ANI): Sri Lankan cricket administrative body, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), has suspended the batting all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of the International cricket for breaching "player code of conduct".

Without giving out the specific details, the SLC statement said that the decision was taken after the player was found guilty of violating the code of conduct.

"The decision to suspend the player was taken following an initial inquiry conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket after the team management reported that the player has violated the ''Code of Conduct'," ESPNcricinfo.com quoted the SLC statement.

The suspension of the Sri Lankan players will be implemented immediately after the ongoing second test of the two-match series against South-Africa here at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Moreover, the 27-year-old will be stripped off his match fees for the ongoing test match.

The issue of misconduct is not a new thing with the right-hand batsman.

Earlier, International Cricket Council (ICC) had admonished the Sri Lankan player for breaching level 1 of the ICC code of conduct by giving Bangladeshi player Tamim Iqbal a send-off while he was on his way to the dressing room. The incident happened in January during the final match of the T20I tri-series against Bangladesh.

In 2017, the batsman was suspended for six one-day matches following a display of poor attitude towards training in a series against India. He was subsequently dropped from the ODI squad selected for the Pakistan series.

On a related note, Sri Lanka are leading the ongoing two-match test series 1-0 against South Africa. (ANI)
