'Need in IPL': Fans React As Third Umpire Uses Ball-Tracking To Determine No-Ball Call

Delhi Capitals batter Jemimah Rodrigues opted for a review to check a waist-high no-ball after the on-field umpire did not signal a no-ball on Megan Schutt's full toss, bowled to her.

DC vs RCB WPL 2023: The second match of highly anticipated Women's Premier League (WPL 2023) match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is being played at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium on Saturday, March 5.

DC vs RCB match, the second match being played in inaugural WPL, saw rare usage of the ball-tracing system, to determine a no-ball call. Usually, the ball tracing system is used for Leg Before Wicket (LBW) in DRS review.

During the match, Delhi Capitals batter Jemimah Rodrigues opted for a review to check a waist-high no-ball after the on-field umpire did not signal a no-ball on Megan Schutt's full toss, bowled to her.

The ball tracker showed that the delivery wasn't a no-ball as the ball was set to hit onto stumps after it crossed Jemimah.

Jemimah was able to use DRS review for a no-ball because of the change in WPL playing conditions.

"A player may also be allowed to review any decision taken by on-field umpires concerning wide or no ball," section 3.1.1 of the WPL playing regulation says.

The new rule was used for the first time in WPL by MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur as she reviewed an umpire's decision of calling a delivery wide despite Gujarat Giants batter Monica Patel edging it.

Here's how fans reacted to the rare occurrence...

ICC's No-Ball Rule: Clause 41.7.1 of the Laws of Cricket confirms: "Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair. Whenever such a delivery is bowled, the umpire shall call and signal No ball."

Coming to the match, batting first, Delhi Capitals scored 223/2 in 20 overs. Shafali Verma (84 runs off 45 balls) and Meg Lanning (72 runs off 43 balls) were DC's top-scorers in first innings. Delhi Capitals have now scored the highest total in Women's Premier League (WPL 2023).  In reply, RCB could score just 163 runs in 20 overs as Delhi started their WPL campaign with a win.
