Virat Kohli's 'Unbreakable IPL Record' Faces 2025 Challenge
RCB legend Virat Kohli's incredible 973-run season in IPL 2016 remains unbeaten.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to kick off on March 22, and excitement is high for another thrilling season. As always, records will be made and broken.
One milestone that has stood tall for eight years is Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) season. However, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill is a strong contender to challenge this feat in IPL 2025.
Virat Kohli's 2016 record still stands
Former India skipper Virat Kohli's incredible 973-run season in IPL 2016 remains unbeaten. Despite numerous batting maestros lighting up the tournament over the years, no one has managed to surpass this mark. As an opener for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kohli will once again have the opportunity to rewrite history.
Shubman Gill's best chance yet
Shubman Gill, one of the finest openers in modern-day cricket, who will lead Gujarat Titans in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, is another top contender.
The stylish right-hander was the highest run-scorer in 2023 IPL season, winning the Orange Cap with 890 runs—falling just short of Kohli's record.
With his consistency and ability to play long innings, Gill is well-positioned to take a serious shot at breaking this record in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
With both Kohli and Gill set to feature in all matches as openers, will this finally be the season when IPL's greatest batting record is broken? The race is on.
Virat Kohli on verge of breaking Shikhar Dhawan's record
Shikhar Dhawan currently holds the record for the most fours in IPL history, having struck 768 boundaries in 221 innings across 222 matches.
With 6769 runs to his name, Dhawan has been a consistent performer in the tournament. However, Virat Kohli is on track to surpass this milestone in IPL 2025.
Kohli, who continues to play for RCB in IPL 2025, is second on the all-time fours list with 705 boundaries. He needs just 64 more fours to surpass Dhawan and claim the record.
In IPL 2024, Kohli hit 62 fours while amassing 741 runs. His highest tally of fours in a single IPL season came in 2016, when he smashed 83 boundaries.
Over his IPL career, Kohli has played 252 matches and scored 8004 runs, making him the tournament's all-time leading run-scorer.
