Why England Cricketers Wear Helmets Even While Facing Spinners?
Ind vs Eng: Here's why English batsmen are seen batting against spinners while wearing helmets instead of caps.
New Delhi: When it comes to playing in any format, be it Test cricket or ODIs, almost all the batsmen in the world prefer to wear caps instead of helmets to avoid the heat and keep themselves relaxed while facing spin bowlers. In the recently-concluded 3rd Test between India and England, Indian captain Virat Kohli was seen batting against the spinners while wearing a cap. But, interestingly all England batsmen were seen playing the Indian spinners with their helmets on. But why?
In the year 2015, on the death anniversary of Australian player Phil Hughes, the England Cricket Board had made a rule that every England batsman would use helmets while facing any kind of bowler. For this reason, English batsmen are also seen batting against spinners while wearing helmets instead of caps.
“To answer the question why Kohli can bat in a cap but England players aren’t allowed to….. the ecb head protection regs state that anyone playing professional or pathway cricket must wear a helmet to bat in. Even against a spinner,” a tweet from an English journalist Elizabest Ammon read.
In the Headingley Test, England made a strong comeback to win the match by an innings and 76 runs. Ollie Robinson took 7 wickets in the match for which he was adjudged the man of the match.
England cricket team have announced their squad for India vs England fourth Test against India. Chris Woakes makes his return to the England squad. The hosts have made two changes to their squad. Chris Woakes comes in place of Saqib Mahmood and Sam Billings replaces Jos Buttler in the squad.
One of England's top-performing players in 2020, Chris Woakes has not played red-ball cricket for almost a year due to England's rotation policy and his injury.
Reacting to Chris Woakes' return in the 15-men squad, England head coach Chris Silverwood said, "It is a matter of great pleasure that Chris Woakes has returned to the Test team. He bowled brilliantly for Warwickshire last week."
