Shikhar Dhawan admitted that if he had been a selector, he would have chosen Shubman Gill, and not himself, for the opening slot as well.
Shikhar Dhawan on Shubman Gill: After bidding farewell to international cricket, Shikhar Dhawan has remained in the spotlight with various statements. The veteran recently made a big revelation regarding rising talent Shubman Gill. He candidly admitted that when Gill emerged as a contender for his opening slot, he couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy.
Shikhar Dhawan, once renowned for his explosive batting for the national team, saw opportunities dwindle as he aged. After being out of the team for two years, he eventually retired from international cricket.

In an interview with Sports Tak, Dhawan admitted that if he had been a selector, he would have chosen Shubman Gill, and not himself, for the opening slot.

"I feel Shubman was already playing both formats and doing really well, both Tests and T20Is. If was playing more matches on the international circuit. If I was the selector, I would've given chance to Shubman," he said.
Dhawan also said that he wants to keep working hard and be ready for any opportunity that arrives.
"Even if the opportunity doesn't come, I won't have the regret in my heart that I didn't prepare myself. Whatever is in my hand, I want to do that," he said.
Shikhar Dhawan made his international debut in 2010. The duo opened in 117 ODIs, amassing 5,193 runs together and consistently troubling bowlers since 2013. However, with the emergence of young talent in India, Dhawan found himself in and out of the team, and after 2022, he did not get another opportunity to play for Team India.
