Ranchi Update: Govt Talks With Student Group, Demands Noted But Protest Continues Over Exam Row

The student agitation in Jharkhand continues as the state government held talks with the second group of protesting candidates at the State Guest House in Ranchi. An eight-member delegation of the JPSC-JSSC Abhyarthi Nyay Manch met the government delegation and raised demands related to disputed examinations, independent investigations and reforms in the recruitment system. The meeting lasted around an hour and was described by student representatives as positive. However, no final decision or concrete timeline for implementation was announced. The students said the government heard their demands, took note of each issue and assured them that the matters would be placed before Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Among the key demands are cancellation of disputed JPSC and JSSC examinations, a CBI and ED investigation into alleged irregularities, and comprehensive reforms in the examination and recruitment process. Students also raised issues concerning the 14th JPSC examination and the cancellation and re-advertisement of certain recruitment vacancies. The government has said it will continue discussions with different stakeholders, including NSUI, JCM and other student organisations. It has also released an email address inviting suggestions from students and other stakeholders on examination reforms and recruitment-related issues. The move has raised questions over whether consultations with multiple student groups could dilute the core demands of the ongoing agitation. The government, however, has maintained that it wants to hear all stakeholders and does not intend to weaken the student movement. Despite the talks, protesting students have decided to continue their agitation until concrete action is taken. They remain firm on demands for independent investigation and cancellation of examinations facing allegations of irregularities.

The latest developments suggest that while dialogue between the government and students has opened a possible path towards a resolution, the central dispute over accountability and examination reforms remains unresolved.
