Shikhar Dhawan 'Shocked' By Asian Games Exclusion, Determined For National Comeback

Asian Games: Shikhar Dhawan, a left-handed opener at 37, was widely anticipated to lead the Indian squad in China, a role he previously held until 10 months ago.

New Delhi: Shikhar Dhawan, the seasoned Indian cricket batter, has shared his "bit of shock" at being left out of India's roster for the upcoming Asian Games. Despite this setback, Dhawan maintains a determined stance, focusing on making a comeback to the national team in the near future. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assembled a squad primarily composed of young players for the Hangzhou Asian Games scheduled for September-October.

Dhawan, a left-handed opener at 37, was widely anticipated to lead the Indian squad in China, a role he previously held until 10 months ago. However, the selection committee opted for Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain instead.

"When my name was not there (for Asian Games), I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it. Happy that Rutu (Gaikwad) will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well," Dhawan told news agncy PTI on Thursday.

As Shubman Gill partners with Rohit Sharma at the top, it seems the Indian team is moving forward without Dhawan, who became a one-format player until his removal from the ODI side after the Bangladesh tour in December 2022.

Remaining optimistic, Dhawan, a key ODI player for India over the last decade, emphasized his readiness for a potential comeback: "I will be ready, of course (for the comeback). That is why I keep myself fit (so whenever I get a chance I am ready). There is always a chance whether it is one percent or 20 percent."

The ever-optimistic Dhawan, who has been among India's leading ODI batters over the past decade, said he can't foresee what is in store for him but will be ready if an opportunity knocks on the door.

Dhawan is also focused on upcoming tournaments beyond the national team. "I have not spoken to any selector (about my future). I keep going to NCA. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career and I am grateful for it. Also, I have to prepare for the IPL. I will be playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali and, hopefully, the Vijay Hazare as well," he said referring to the two domestic tournaments.

Despite the challenges, Dhawan remains positive and committed to his cricketing journey.
