Not Gill, Not Bumrah! Ashwin Names Surprise Contender For India's Test Captaincy

Team India is set to tour England for a five-match Test series beginning June 20, shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2025.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announcing retirement from Test cricket , Team India now faces a major decision - who will be the next Test captain? While Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah have emerged as the frontrunners, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin has thrown a surprising name into the ring: Ravindra Jadeja.

Ashwin's take: Don't overlook Jadeja

Ravichandran Ashwin's suggestion brings a fresh angle to the captaincy debate. While Jadeja hasn't been widely discussed as a contender, he's now one of the most experienced players in the Test squad - after Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ashwin himself.

Statistically solid and a proven match-winner with both bat and ball, Jadeja's only drawback is his limited experience as captain.

"We should not say this, Ravindra Jadeja is the most experienced person in that team. If you're willing to train a new guy, Jadeja could do captaincy for two years with a vice-captain under him. It will seem like I'm throwing in a wildcard," said Ashwin on YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.

"We all wish to captain India after playing for the team. Jadeja too must be having that dream. He has also captained Chennai Super Kings, although that did not go well. I'm not saying he should become captain, but definitely be considered," he added.

Ashwin feels coach Gambhir will play a key role in chosing India's next Test captain.

"Whatever team gets selected will be the team of Gautam Gambhir. The most experienced player apart from Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah is Gambhir only. He will have huge say in the appointment of captain as he has to groom the side," Ashwin explained.

Big series ahead

Team India is set to tour England for a five-match Test series beginning June 20, shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2025. With the series just weeks away, the BCCI is expected to name the new Test captain soon.
