Ramesh Powar becomes Indian women's team head coach for 3 months

He became the third coach of women’s team in past one and a half year.

Former Indian spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the new coach of the Indian Women’s cricket team till November 30, 2018. His term will include the tour to Sri Lanka in September, a bilateral series in West Indies in October, followed by ICC Women’s World T20 in West Indies in November 2018.

The Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrator (CoA) took this decision after interviewing a plethora of former Indian cricketers who applied for the post.

"The BCCI has appointed Mr Ramesh Powar as Head Coach of the Indian Women's Team. Mr Powar has now been handed over full-time duties till 30th November 2018," the Board's secretary Amitabh Choudhary said in a statement.

Powar, who recently returned from Australia after finishing his doing Level-III course, was initially appointed as the interim coach of the Women’s team in July after the dramatic exit of Tushar Arothe. He became the third coach of women’s team in past one and a half year.

Before Arothe, the post was held by Purnima Rau, who was removed just a few months ahead of the women’s World Cup in 2017.

Powar was also one of the strongest contenders to be appointed as Mumbai Ranji trophy team’ head coach. Had he been appointed in that role, he wouldn’t be appointed as the coach of the women’s team.

He featured in 2 Tests and 31 ODIs for India and took 6 and 34 wickets respectively. In first-class cricket, he has 470 wickets from 148 matches.
