According to former Australia T20I captain George Bailey, Mahendra Singh Dhoni would organize hookah sessions with young cricketers to break down barriers between senior and junior players. This revelation by Bailey was made back in 2018 as he shared his experiences during his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Bailey was recounting his experiences playing under Dhoni's captaincy during his stints with Chennai Super Kings (2009-2012) and Rising Pune Supergiant (2016) in IPL.

“He likes smoking a bit of the sheesha or the hookah. So, he quite often would set that up in his room, and it was very much open open-door policy. You would go in and quite often find a lot of younger players there. For India or a lot of other cricket teams, it can be hierarchical, but he certainly broke that down,” Bailey said in a video posted by Cricket Australia.

“You just find yourself in his room late at night chatting inevitably about the game or different facets of the game or about different people and with different people it’s a great way to break down barriers,” he added.

MS Dhoni, the iconic captain, has steered the franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to record-equaling five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. The legendary wicket-keeper batter is set to resume leadership duties for CSK in the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
