Jos Buttler Resigns As England's White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy Exit

England's campaign in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament ended in disappointment.

England cricket team has faced a major setback after their early exit from ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Friday. Their white-ball captain Jos Buttler has stepped down from his role.

Buttler will lead England one final time in their final group stage match against South Africa on Saturday (March 1) at the National Stadium in Karachi. England's campaign in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament ended in disappointment, as they suffered an early exit following a shocking defeat to Afghanistan.

Jos Buttler took over as England's full-time limited-overs captain in 2022, succeeding Eoin Morgan. While he has stepped down from the captaincy, Buttler is expected to continue representing England as a player.

England began their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a five-wicket loss to Australia, followed by a nail-biting eight-run defeat against Afghanistan. These consecutive losses saw them crash out of the semifinals race, marking their third consecutive white-ball disappointment under Buttler after failing to defend the 50-over and 20-over World Cups in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

England's performance in ODIs under Jos Buttler

England's ODI performance suffered under Jos Buttler's captaincy. After a disappointing exit from 2023 ODI World Cup, the team endured another early elimination in the 2025 Champions Trophy, bowing out in the group stage.

Buttler led England in 43 ODIs, securing just 18 wins while suffering 25 defeats. His individual form was also disappointing, managing only 199 runs in 11 innings at an average of 18 across the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

However, Buttler found success in T20 cricket, guiding England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title. In the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies, he led England to the semifinals before they were knocked out by India.
