Kingston: An unbeaten century from Roston Chase helped West Indies fight back for an unlikely draw against India on the final day of the second test on Wednesday.

After a top order collapse on a rain-interrupted fourth day, West Indies had begun the final day's play on 48-4 in its second innings. Still 256 runs behind India's commanding first innings score of 500-9 declared, it looked destined for defeat.

But a combative display by the hosts' middle order saw all four players who batted Wednesday score half centuries — led by Chase's 137.

West Indies finished the match on 388-6, 84 runs in the lead. With 45 minutes to play, India captain Virat Kohli shook hands with his counterpart Jason Holder, conceding the draw.

It was the first time West Indies had scored over 300 runs in an innings in this four-match series, which India leads 1-0.

Chase batted throughout the day, initially supported by Jermaine Blackwood, who hit an aggressive 63 from just 54 balls before falling to the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Knocks of 74 from Shane Dowrich, who was dismissed by spinner Amit Mishra, and 64 not out from captain Holder moved the hosts past India's first innings score and on toward a hard-fought draw.

Frustrating for the tourists, the result should build West Indies' confidence ahead of the third test in St Lucia, starting Aug. 9.

Brief Scores

West Indies: 196 and 388/6 in 104 overs (Roston Chase 137 not out, Jason Holder 64 not out, Shane Dowrich 74, Jermaine Blackwood 63; Mohammad Shami 2/82, Amit Mishra 2/90).

India 1st innings: 500/9 decl (KL Rahul 158, Ajinkya Rahane 108 not out; Roston Chase 5/121).
