India's Underwhelming Test Record In England

India prepares to play Test series against England without legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who recently retired from the longest format.

The Indian cricket team is currently in England, where an unofficial Test between India A and the senior side is being played. This serves as a build-up to the highly anticipated five-match Test series starting June 20 — a symbolic beginning of a new era in Indian cricket.

For the first time, Shubman Gill will lead the Test team, as India prepares to play without legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who recently retired from the longest format.

India’s Struggles in England

India’s Test record in England has been underwhelming. Out of 69 Tests played on English soil, India has won only 9, lost 38, and drawn 22. The last series win came in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. Since then, India suffered series defeats in 2011, 2014, and 2018, while the 2021–22 series ended in a 2-2 draw.

Legendary pacer Zaheer Khan was the star of the 2007 win, taking 9 wickets in the second Test and helping India to a historic 1-0 series victory.

New Leadership, New Hopes

With veterans like Rohit, Kohli, and R Ashwin no longer in the Test mix, the team is now in the hands of a younger generation. New captain Shubman Gill takes charge as captain, with wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant as vice-captain.

Star pacer Arshdeep Singh and in-from Sai Sudharsan have earned their maiden Test call-ups, while veteran Karun Nair returns after eight years, thanks to his consistent domestic performances.

The team will look to rising stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill to deliver with the bat. A series win in England would be a defining moment for this young squad — and a potential turning point in India's Test cricket journey.
