Manchester: Only A Handful Of Indian Centurions In Decades - Check List

The current Indian squad touring England does not have a single batter who has even scored a half-century at Old Trafford.

The fourth Test match between England and India will be played from 23 July at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester. England currently leads the five-match Test series 2-1.

This is now the final opportunity for Team India to avoid a series defeat.

Shubman Gill and company will aim to level the series by winning the fourth Test, but defeating England at this venue will not be an easy task for the Indian team. Even legendary batters like Virat Kohli have not been able to score a Test century at Old Trafford.

Only 8 Indian batsmen have scored centuries in Manchester

The current Indian squad touring England does not have a single batter who has even scored a half-century at Old Trafford. In fact, the entire playing XI is set to feature on this ground for the first time in their careers.

So far, only eight Indian batters have managed to score centuries at this venue. Virat Kohli’s name is not among them. For Shubman Gill, this will also be a debut Test at this ground.

Mohammad Azharuddin, Abbas Ali Baig, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, Syed Mushtaq Ali, Sandeep Patil, Sachin Tendulkar, and Polly Umrigar are the only Indians who have scored centuries at Manchester’s Old Trafford.

No Indian century in Manchester for 35 years

The last time an Indian batter scored a century at Old Trafford was back in 1990.

During that Test, Mohammad Azharuddin scored 179 runs in India’s first innings. Later in the match, Sachin Tendulkar scored 119 runs in the second innings. Since then, over the last 35 years, no Indian cricketer has managed to reach a century on this ground.

A must-win situation for India

India faces a must-win situation in the 4th Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, starting July 23. Trailing 2-1 in the series, India will rely on Jasprit Bumrah’s return and improved batting to overcome their poor record at this venue and level the series 2-2.
