Joe Root becomes 3rd youngest batsmen to score 6000 Test runs

The England skipper in whites reached this feat in the 71st Test match of his career

England Test skipper Joe Root added another feather to his cap while batting against India in the first Test at Edgbaston on Thursday. The 27-year-old batsman not only completed 6000 runs in the longest format of international cricket but also became the third youngest batsman after Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar and Alastair Cook to reach this feat.

When Sachin added these many Test runs to his name, he was only 26 years and 313 days old while Cook was 27 years and 43 days old. Root, whose current age is 27 years and 214 days, reached this milestone in the 71st match of his Test career.

26y 313d – Sachin Tendulkar

27y 043d – Alastair Cook

27y 214d – Joe Root

27y 323d – Graeme Smith

28y 217d – Steve Smith

28y 329d – AB de Villiers

At the same time Root became the 3rd fastest English batsman to score 6000 runs in whites. Surpassing Kevin Pietersen and Cook, the current English Test captain achieved this in 127 innings.

127 – Joe Root

128 – Kevin Pietersen

131 – Alastair Cook

The third height he reached in due course, Root took fewest days from his debut to score these many runs in his career. Going past several big names including Cook, Pietersen, David Warner, Andrew Strauss and Graeme Smith, Root achieved this feat on 2058 days from his debut date.

2192 – Kevin Pietersen

2216 – David Warner

2410 – Andrew Straus

2479 – Graeme Smith
