Dhaka Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against Bangladesh Cricket Legend

Shakib Al Hasan is currently in Dubai, reportedly due to political unrest in Bangladesh. Adding to his troubles, he faces allegations of murder, further complicating his position.

Bangladesh's star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is facing mounting troubles, with legal challenges and cricket-related setbacks threatening his career. In September 2024, England and Wales Cricket Board banned his bowling action, deeming it illegal. Now, a Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against him in a cheque bounce case, further complicating his situation.

The warrant was issued by Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman, naming Shakib and three others, including his company Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited's manager, Shahgir Hussain, director Imdadul Haque, and Malaikar Begum. The case, filed by IFIC Bank’s relationship officer Shahibur Rahman, alleges that Shakib and his company failed to clear dues of 41.4 million taka (around INR 3 crore) through bounced cheques.

Shakib was summoned to appear in court on January 19, 2025, following a hearing on December 18, 2024, but his absence prompted the court to issue the arrest warrant.

Shakib is currently in Dubai, reportedly due to political unrest in Bangladesh. Adding to his troubles, he faces allegations of murder, further complicating his position. His last Test appearance was against India in 2024, after which he announced his retirement. However, he had expressed a desire to play a farewell Test at home against South Africa, a plan that was declined by the board due to security concerns.

Despite retiring from T20Is following 2024 T20 World Cup, Shakib has shown interest in representing Bangladesh in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, his legal issues and ongoing controversies cast doubt on his participation.

Shakib Al Hasan remains one of Bangladesh's most celebrated cricketers - have a look at his career stats:

Tests: 71 matches, 4609 runs, 246 wickets

ODIs: 247 matches, 7570 runs, 317 wickets

T20Is: 129 matches, 2551 runs, 149 wickets
