Why Lord Vishnu's Narasimha Avatar Is Not Worshipped In The Morning? Know Here

Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped not in the morning but in the evening. Let’s find out the reason behind this unique tradition.

Narasimha Jayanti 2025: Narasimha Jayanti is being celebrated today, May 11, 2025, on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. This auspicious day marks the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Narasimha—his fourth avatar—taken to protect his ardent devotee Prahlad and to slay the demon king Hiranyakashipu.

The Narasimha avatar is unique as it displays both the fierce and compassionate aspects of Lord Vishnu. In this form, the Lord appeared with the face and features of a lion and the body of a human. While he destroyed the tyrant Hiranyakashipu in his fierce form, he also protected the virtuous Prahlad in his benevolent aspect. Worshipping Narasimha on this day is believed to free devotees from hardships, bring peace and prosperity, and help remove the ill effects of Kaal Sarp Dosh.

Why Is Lord Narasimha Worshipped In The Evening?

Unlike other deities who are traditionally worshipped in the morning, Lord Narasimha is worshipped in the evening. According to legend, Lord Vishnu appeared in his Narasimha form during twilight to defeat Hiranyakashipu. The demon had a boon that he could not be killed during the day or night. Hence, the twilight hour (sandhya kaal) was chosen for his demise. This is the reason the puja is specifically performed in the evening.

Rituals And Puja Vidhi:

To perform the Narasimha Jayanti puja, devotees should begin with cleaning the prayer area in the evening. After taking a bath, install a platform (chowki) and place an idol or picture of Lord Narasimha on it. Keep a kalash (sacred pot) filled with rice (akshat) nearby. Bathe the idol and apply sandalwood paste. Offer yellow clothes, tulsi leaves, and prasad. Light a lamp in front of the deity.

To eliminate the negative influence of Kaal Sarp Dosh, devotees may also offer a peacock feather to the Lord. Chant Narasimha mantras, read the Narasimha Chalisa or narrate the story of his incarnation. Conclude the puja with an aarti and donate yellow-colored items.
